The Flu, Awards & Being Snowed In*, 12/13/2003

Everyone at our house has been sickly the last week or two. Jacob has had a sinus infection. The GirlChild had the flu. The Husband had some kind of sinus thing going as did I.

The Doctor gave the GirlChild some sort of anti-viral and just for good measure we all got some. At $60 a person I damn sure hope it works. So far no one else has come down with the flu, and the GirlChild appears to be over it so maybe it did its job. The BoyChild appeared to have a little fever today and acts like he doesn't feel very good which is worrying.

Last week I won an award. The Lawyers for Children group had their annual fund raiser. I got the award for service to children. I helped handle a termination case for them that was truly horrible; physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, this one ran the whole gamut. We tried it for, if I remember correctly, 7 days. And of course we won.

After I won the award, as I was returning to my table, one of the doctor's sitting at the table next to me turned to congratulate me and said "are you RangerDoc's sister?" At the time I remember thinking it was a small world. I wish I could remember who he was.

We got hit with a snow storm this weekend. About 4:00 everyone panicked and they sent all the staff home. I left about 4:30 to get the BoyChild. It took me about an hour to get from my office to Baba and GranMa's. It then took about an hour to get from their house to our house. The roads weren't too bad but snow, slush and ice makes people stupid. My ecological disaster didn't have any trouble but it's big, it's heavy and has some kind of no-spin feature to it that keeps your tires from spinning.

My adversary cases are kicking my ass at work. I think when the smoke and dust all cleared, I only ended up filing 158 of them. I've been trying to get rid of those that I can and have been working 10-11 hours a day and not keeping up.

Some of the payments I sued for had bounced and those checks had not been replaced. Some of the payments, when I looked at the documents behind them, we subject to statutory exceptions. Some of the people are just paying me to dismiss the claims. Since we are going to Galveston with the Baba and GranMa over Christmas, I'm going to have to work hard the next couple of weeks to get everything in order so I can be gone. Damn this Christmas holiday in between now and then.

I guess the Husband has turned the heat down because I’m getting cold. I’ll go to bed now where he can keep me warm.

Peace,
M&Co.
